WHAT IS MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING?
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative conversation for strengthening a person’s own intrinsic motivation and commitment to change.
At MMIC, we view Motivational Interviewing as a way of interacting with others that fosters positive relationships and creates meaningful dialogue. These types of interactions are critical to sustained success. By making MI a focal point for your organization, you will see a seismic shift in your culture and environment, increasing retention, productivity, and customer/client service.
The benefits of MI Training include:
- Increased competency and confidence
- Improved staff and management relations
- A positive and energetic workplace
- Better conflict resolution skills
- Greater staff and customer/client satisfaction

Motivation refers to someone’s desire to engage in a behaviour, which can be influenced by both internal and external factors. The goal is to evoke an individual’s intrinsic motivation because we know it is more impactful and prolonged than extrinsic motivation.

Interviewing refers to a dynamic in which one party is seeking information from another. The reason this term was chosen for MI is because it does not dictate which party is taking on which role. In MI, these roles are fluid. There will be times when the individual seeking support is gathering information and resources, “interviewing” the supporter, just as there will be times when the person providing the support is learning about the other individual, “interviewing” the supportee.
Some of the core principles of MI include
- Person-Centered
- Partnership
- Acceptance
- Empowerment
- Compassion
- Guiding
