Expert(ise)

One expectation service providers sometimes have is to “know the answer” or “have the solution” because they are widely considered experts in a particular field or life area.

This can create pressure that impacts their ability to be present and focus on listening to the client.

It also encourages the client to rely on others to resolve the challenges they experience instead of empowering them to take control of their own decision-making.

***In MI, the service provider is believed to have expertise. However, the client is always viewed as the expert of their own life. This dynamic promotes the client’s autonomy and allows the helper to provide information or insight when appropriate.
