Locus of Control

Locus of control is a psychological principle that refers to the degree to which we believe we have control over our lives and the events that occur.

While it’s undeniable that some things are beyond our control, there are many decisions and choices we make daily that have an impact on what our journey will look like.

Oftentimes, when people feel as though life is happening to them, creating a sense of helplessness or hopelessness, it’s because they’re perspective aligns more closely with an external locus of control.

***In MI, part of empowering individuals is helping them focus on what they can control, taking small steps toward their goals. This shift towards an internal locus of control can foster confidence and result in change.
