There are four “processes” (or “tasks”) in Motivational Interviewing, each of which serves a different purpose and contributes to the change process its own way.
Given that they build on one another, they’re each necessary and important. However, one could argue that evoking is where the magic happens.
It’s also fair to say that evoking is most representative of the overall approach MI encompasses when interacting with others because it emphasizes empowerment through a person-centered lens.
***In MI, the evoking process focuses on unearthing or eliciting the individual’s thoughts, beliefs, values, etc., rather than adding your own as the practitioner. This is a subtle but critical differentiation from other approaches or modalities.
