Autonomy

When an individual we support expresses a desire to change and begins moving through the four processes, it’s easy to find ourselves taking charge.

This can show up as us creating motivation on their behalf, shifting from guiding to leading, or taking ownership of their behaviour change. All of which we do with the best of intentions.

While it’s critical to stay alongside them throughout their journey, it’s important to remain person-centered.

***In MI, we want to respect their autonomy by empowering them to make decisions and take responsibility for their change, which we’re fortunate to be a part of.
