Following vs. Guiding vs. Directing

Following – Allowing the client/customer to take the lead on where the conversation goes and what’s discussed.

Directing – The service provider takes the lead on where the conversation goes and what’s discussed.

Guiding – The service provider focuses the conversation around what the client/customer wants to discuss while ensuring the conversation stays on track to create a meaningful interaction.

***In MI, guiding is the optimal style to maintain a sense of order and direction while ensuring the client/customer’s needs are met.
